If you are using X-on X-off handshaking, you only need 3 wires. On a
25-pin connector, that is 2 to 3, 3 to 2 and 7 to 7. If that doesn't
work, try 2 to 2 and 3 to 3. 7 is ground.

You can make one up with 2 plugs and some 3-core lighting flex. RS232 is
not critical electrically, so long as you have the right connections.
The problem comes from the lack of an agreed standard for hardware
handshaking connections.

There are some good suggestions in "The Art of Electronics" by Horowicz
and Hill.
